Description

For sample adults who were employed in the previous week (EMPSTAT) and who work in an organization with at least 50 employees (NUMEMPLOC50), WHISTD indicates whether the respondent had access to materials and or programs on sexually transmitted diseases at their workplace.

Interviewers asked, "In the past year, at your workplace, have any materials or programs been made available to employees on any of these topics?" Respondents were then handed a card with nine specific choices (including "sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV or AIDS)") plus "other." (Interviewers are instructed to read categories if it is a telephone interview.) The survey form directs interviewers to ask, "Which?" if the respondent replies "Yes." Interviewers are instructed to clarify if necessary by stating, "This includes brochures, programs, talk, or counseling," and to probe for additional answers by asking, "Anything else?" Finally, interviewers are instructed to mark all categories that apply.

Other choices specified included:

  • Health information at work: Don't know or refused (WHIDK)
  • Health information at work: Alcohol/drug (WHIDRUGS)
