Description
For all persons, INCFAM20K indicates whether total combined family income was more or less than $20,000. Respondents were asked to include money from jobs, social security, retirement income, unemployment payments, public assistance, interest, dividends, net capital income, and any other money income received. Responses are reported in nominal dollars and have not been adjusted for inflation.
Data users who wish for more precise family income may use INCFAM8296 (total combined family income, 1982-1996 grouping) or INCFAM9706 (total combined family income, 1997-2006 grouping). See the drop down menu for additional related variables.
Comparability
From 1982 to 1996, this question was asked prior to establishing the precise family income. Beginning in 1997, the field representative asked for a precise family income; if the respondent refused or did not know, the field representative asked whether income was greater or less than $20,000. Precise answers were also categorized as above or below $20,000, so that only individuals who did not answer either the precise income question or this question were coded as refused or don't know.
