Description
For sample adults who have ever seen a health professional for dizziness or a balance problem (BALGOHOSPEV and BALSAWHPEV), BALHPTIM1ST indicates the time since the person first saw a health professional about this problem. Please see the Universe tab for information on how the universe has changed over time.
This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
Please see Universe tab for changes in the universe over time. In 2008, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom BALSBOTHER). Beginning in 2016, the question refers more generally to whether the action usually happens around the same time as dizziness or balance problem(s).
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever seen a health professional, including ER physicians, for symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem.
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a balance or dizziness problem in the past 12 months or who had at least one symptom in the past 12 months AND who ever saw a doctor or other health professional (including ER) about a dizziness or balance problem.
