Description

ALCTYPYEARS reports the number of years for which a two-week period was typical of his or her drinking. The two-week period referenced differs by sample year.

In 1983, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and over who have had twelve drinks in any year of their life, whose last drink was more than a year ago, and who did not report that they drank no alcoholic beverages in a typical week around the time of their last drink. The reference period of alcohol consumption is the two weeks prior to the person's last drink.

In 1988, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and over who have had twelve drinks in the past year and at least one drink in the last two weeks, whose drinking in the last two weeks was typical of the last twelve months or who did not know if it was typical (ALCTYP2WK). The reference period of alcohol consumption is the most recent two-week period.

Comparability

Due to a change in universe, response to the 1983 variable should not be compared directly to the 1988 variable. Respondents in 1983 were persons whose most recent drink was over a year ago and who were not alcohol abstainers before their most recent drink. Respondents in 1988 were persons who are current alcohol drinkers whose most recent two-week period was typical of their drinking in the last year.
