Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults, WORKVOLHCSET reports whether the respondent currently works or volunteers in a health care setting, including hospitals, medical clinics, doctor's or dentist's offices, or nursing homes. This also includes first responders, public safety personnel, part-time and unpaid work in a health care facility and professional nursing care provided in the home. Beginning in 2019, the universe for WORKVOLHCSET excludes respondents who work directly with patients (WORKVOLMED).
WORKVOLHCSET is part of a series of questions related to adult access to and utilization of health care. For more information please use the search function and IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus.
Comparability
In 2012, the survey text was modified and with a more expansive list of who should be included. "Emergency responders and public safety personnel" were added as examples of who should be included in this variable. Otherwise, there are no comparability issues prior to 2019.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
