TOMSAUCEMNO
Frequency eating tomato sauce, past month: Number of units

Codes

TOMSAUCEMNO is a 3-digit-numeric variable.

0: Never
996: Not in Universe
997: Unknown-refused
998: Unknown-not ascertained
999: Unknown-don't know

Description

For sample adults 18 and over, TOMSAUCEMNO reports how many times the respondent ate tomato sauce in a specified time period. This includes tomato sauce with spaghetti or noodles, or mixed into foods, such as lasagna. Tomato sauce on pizza was not included. TOMSAUCEMNO should be used in conjunction with TOMSAUCEMTP, which reports the corresponding time unit (per day, per week or per month) stated by the respondent.

TOMSAUCEMNO is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues. However, a similar variable from 2005, TOMSAUCEMO, reports the frequency with which respondents eat tomato sauce, but organize responses into pre-defined response categories, instead of using the standardized NHIS food frequency format, recording the number of times a food was consumed and the corresponding time unit. Data users interested in using more years of available data may consider modifying the standardized food frequency format TOMSAUCEMNO and TOMSAUCEMTP to correspond to the pre-defined categories from 2005. It should be noted that TOMSAUCEMNO and TOMSAUCEMTP do not include tomato sauce on pizza, while TOMSAUCEMO does.

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
