Description
For persons ages 5-24 in 1974 and sample children ages 3-17 who have never had their teeth straightened or braces or bands placed on their teeth, TOLDTETH records whether a dentist or doctor has ever said that the person's teeth need to be straightened.

Comparability
The age universe changes over time. In 1974, this question is asked about persons ages 5-24 in 1974. In 1981, this question is asked only about sample children ages 3-17. In both years, only persons who have not had their teeth straightened or had bands placed on their teeth are included in the universe.
Universe
- 1974: Persons age 5 to 24 who have never had their teeth straightened or had bands on their teeth.
- 1981: Sample persons age 3-17 who did not already have braces.
