Description

For sample adults age 18+ and sample children ages 4-17, THPYART indicates whether they saw an art therapist during the past 12 months. Respondents were told that "art therapists work with patients to make artwork to help with emotions."

THPYART was one of twenty-five variables sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to assess complementary and integrative health (CIH) practices in 2022. Similar questions about CIH practices were previously fielded in 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017. Please see the Alternative Health drop-down menu to browse all available alternative health variables.

The NCCIH defines complementary and integrative health as a set of non-conventional medicine practices that are used together with (complementary) or in a coordinated way with (integrative) conventional medicine approaches. The purpose of the CIH questions was to assess the use of non-conventional therapies and practices and to ask about visits to CIH practitioners.

Sample adults and sample children ages 4-17 were asked about their use of chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, naturopathy, meditation, guided imagery or progressive relaxation, and yoga in the past 12 months. For each health practice they indicated engaging in, they were also asked if they engaged in that health practice to treat or manage pain or to restore overall health. Respondents were also asked two additional questions about their use of breathing and meditation during yoga and two questions about their use of art and music therapy.
