Description
SUNTANUSE indicates whether the respondent used a sunlamp, sunbed, or tanning booth at least one time in the past 12 months. The question explicitly excluded spray-on tans. Please see comparability tab for change in universe.
For respondents with an affirmative response in SUNTANUSE, interviewers asked a follow-up question about the number of times the indoor tanning device was used during the past 12 months (SUNTANO).
For more information, please see SUN1HR.
Comparability
In 2005 and 2008, this question was only asked of children aged 14 to 17 years old. In 2010, this question was asked of 14 to 17 year old children and all sample adults. In 2013, this question was asked only of all sample adults , and for sample adults 18+ who have ever used an indoor tanning device in 2015. Researchers are advised to create a binary indicator (yes/no) variable for adult tanning use (SUNTANO) for 2005 and 2008 to make children and adults comparable in all years.
