SPNEEDLIM
Has special health care need from functional limitations

Codes

SPNEEDLIM is a one-column variable.

1 = No -- No special health care need in the domain of functional limitations
2 = Yes -- Special health care need in the domain of functional limitations
9 = NIU

Description

SPNEEDLIM indicates whether sample children age 17 and under met the criteria for having a special health care need in the domain of functional limitations. Children met the criteria for this classification if they were limited in any way in their ability to do the things most children of the same age can do because of a medical, behavioral, or other health condition that had lasted or was expected to last for at least 12 months.

SPNEEDLIM is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to a series of questions that were part of the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Supplement included in the Sample Child Health Care Access and Utilization section of the NHIS. A value of 1 in SPNEEDLIM indicates that the child did not have a special health care need in the domain of functional limitations; a value of 2 in SPNEEDLIM indicates that the child had a special health care need in the domain of functional limitations. For information on the variables and scoring procedures used to determine if sample children qualified as having this particular special health care need, see CHNEEDRX.

Related Variables

Two other domains of special health care need can be identified through the questions asked in the CSHCN Supplement.

The variables SPNEEDSERV and SPNEEDRX respectively indicate whether the child's special health care needs were in the domain of "service use above that considered usual or routine" and/or "dependency on prescription medication."

The IHIS-created variable SPNEEDKID indicates whether sample children age 17 and under met the criteria for having a special health care need. Children met the criteria for having a special health care need if they had a medical, behavioral, or other health condition that (1) lasted or was expected to last for at least 12 months, and (2) required health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. Children with a special health care need in any of the three domains identified by SPNEEDRX, SPNEEDSERV, and SPNEEDLIM have a positive value (IHIS code 2) in SPNEEDKID.
