Description

For sample respondents age 18 and over who have worked in the past 2 weeks for a private company or in the public sector, smoke on some days, and ever smoked while at work, SMOKWORKWA indicates the respondent smokes within his or her own work area.

The question for SMOKWORKWA asked where the respondent smoked when at work. In 1992, respondent's were handed a card with the following responses listed on it, and were asked to indicate all that applied: "in my work area," "in a public area, such as a restroom, lunchroom, lobby, or other smoking area," "outside the building," and "not applicable -- I work outside or at different sites." In 1994, the additional categories of "in my car or other vehicles," and "other" were added to the survey.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is comparable over time.

The changes in the response categories reduce comparability between 1992 and 1994 for other variables related to the question on where the respondent smoked at work. The addition of "in my car or other vehicles," and "other" in 1994 may reduce comparability for the variables SMOKWORKOUT, smoked outside the building, and SMOKWORKOTH, smoke in a place other than listed on the card.
