Description

For sample respondents age 18 and over who have worked in the past 2 weeks for a private company or in the public sector, smoke on some days, and ever smoked while at work, SMOKWORKOUT indicates the respondent smokes outside the building when they smoke at work.

In both 1992 and 1994, the question for SMOKWORKOUT asked where the respondent smoked when at work. In 1992, respondent's were handed a card with the following responses listed on it, and were asked to indicate all that applied: "in my work area," "in a public area, such as a restroom, lunchroom, lobby, or other smoking area," "outside the building," and "not applicable -- I work outside or at different sites." In 1994, the additional categories of "in my car or other vehicles," and "other" were added to the survey.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, the additional response category of "in my car" and "other" in 1994 may reduce comparability between the 1992 and 1994 surveys. For example, respondents who smoked in their car in 1992 may have reported "outside the building" for lack of an exact response category, whereas in 1994 this separate responses was recognized
