Description

For all sample persons age 18 and over who have ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes, this variable reports the age when the respondent first tried cigarettes.

The term "tried" is respondent defined. Interviewers were instructed to round down to the nearest whole year, if the respondent reported their age in a fraction, (e.g., "twelve and a half"). Interviewers were also instructed to accept an estimate for the respondent's age if he or she was unsure, and to "footnote the situation."
