Description
For all sample persons age 18 and over who have ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes, this variable reports the age when the respondent first tried cigarettes.
[show more]The term "tried" is respondent defined. Interviewers were instructed to round down to the nearest whole year, if the respondent reported their age in a fraction, (e.g., "twelve and a half"). Interviewers were also instructed to accept an estimate for the respondent's age if he or she was unsure, and to "footnote the situation."
