Description

For sample respondents age 18 and over who have worked in the past 2 weeks for a private company or the federal, state, or local government, worked mainly indoors
SMOKOKWKAREA indicates whether smoking was allowed in the respondent's immediate work area. For 1992, this question was asked only of respondents who said their employer had an official policy to restrict smoking.

Related Variables

For 1992 this question was follow up to SMOKEPOLWORK, the employer's smoking policy for work areas. For 1991, this was a follow-up question for SMOKWORKAREA , if anyone smoked in the respondent's immediate work area in the past two weeks.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CAEP supplement) who had a job in the past 2 weeks and who spent at least half of their work day inside an office building where at least 5 people worked.
  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who work for a private company or for federal, state, or local government, who worked in the past 2 weeks, and who work in an indoor work area .
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have a job with a private company or the federal, state or local government, who were employed during the past two weeks, who normally work indoors (or for whom the type of work area was unknown), and whose employer has an official policy to restrict smoking.
