Description
For sample persons ages 17 and over, SMOKESTATUS6 is a recoded variable indicating the respondent's current smoking status in categories of never smoked, occasional smoker, present smoker, former smoker, smoker whose present smoking status is unknown, and unknown smoking status ever.

Comparability
There are no comparability issues with this variable. In 1978 and 1980 the question was asked only in quarters 3 and 4. Changes in sampling frequency may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
