Description
For sample adults who ever smoked 100 cigarettes, SMOKESTATUS4 is a recoded variable indicating the respondent's current smoking status in categories of current smoker, former smoker, and unknown current smoking status. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in the universe between samples.

Comparability
For 1978, 1979, and 1980 samples, this question was asked only to persons ages 17 and over who ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their entire lives but never began smoking cigarettes regularly. In 1983 this question was asked to all persons ages 18 and over who ever smoked 100 cigarettes. Data users wishing to restrict the 1983 sample to persons who never began smoking cigarettes regularly may add related variable CIGSDAYES.
In addition to changes in the universe, in 1978 and 1980 the question was asked only in quarters 3 and 4. Changes in sampling frequency may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
