Description

For sample respondents age 18 and over, and all persons in 1991, SMOKEHOME indicates whether anyone smoked cigarettes, cigars, or pipes anywhere inside the respondent's home (at the time of the survey). These terms were all respondent defined and the smoker did not have to be a family member.

Related Variables

For all years, respondents who answered yes were asked to report on average how many days per week someone smokes inside their home (SMOKHOMEDAYS).

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1991: All persons.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement).
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement).
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+.
