SMKLSEV indicates if the respondent ever used smokeless tobacco products. The following description of smokeless tobacco products was given: "Smokeless tobacco products are placed in the mouth or nose and can include chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, snus (snoose), or dissolvable tobacco." Nicotine replacement therapy products such as a patch, gum, lozenge, or spray were considered smoking cessation treatments and were not included. Respondents were asked if they had ever used any of these smokeless tobacco products, even if it was only one time.
SMKLSEV was introduced in 2012, along with several other questions regarding non-cigarette tobacco use, as part of the Adult Health Behaviors (AHB) section of the sample adult questionnaire. In 2015, this question was asked as part of the Cancer Module rather than the AHB section. Other than this change in the location of the question on the NHIS questionnaire, there are no comparability issues.
