Description
For sample adults age 18 and older, SMKLSEV indicates if they ever used smokeless tobacco products. The following description of smokeless tobacco products was given: "Smokeless tobacco products are placed in the mouth or nose and can include chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, snus (snoose), or dissolvable tobacco." Nicotine replacement therapy products such as a patch, gum, lozenge, or spray were considered smoking cessation treatments and were not included. Respondents were asked if they had ever used any of these smokeless tobacco products, even if it was only one time.
Comparability
SMKLSEV was introduced in 2012, along with several other questions regarding non-cigarette tobacco use, as part of the Adult Health Behaviors (AHB) section of the sample adult questionnaire. In 2015, this question was asked as part of the Cancer Module rather than the AHB section.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
