Description
For sample adults age 50+ who have ever had a shingles vaccine (SHOTSHNGEV) in 2017-2020 or sample adults age 18+ with a weakened immune system (IMSPCHC) who have ever had a shingles vaccine in 2017-2020, SHOTSGRXEV reports whether someone has ever had the Shingrix vaccine, the new shingles vaccine which requires 2 shots. Prior to 2022, SHOTSGRXEV was asked of sample adults aged 50 and older who had had a shingles vaccine.
SHOTSGRXEV is part of a series of variables initiated in 2018 dealing with shingles and vaccines.
Please refer to SHOTSHNGEV for more information about measuring shingles in NHIS and other shingles vaccination variables.
Comparability
This variable has some comparability issues over time.
In 2022, the universe for SHOTSGRXEV was expanded to include sample adults 18+ with a weakened immune system (IMSPCHC) but limited to those who had received the shingles vaccine in years 2017-2020. Prior to 2022, the universe included only sample adults aged 50 and older but did not limit which years the shingles vaccine had been received.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
