Description

For sample adults, SHOTHEPBEV indicates whether sample adults had ever received the hepatitis B vaccine.

Along with the question, "Have you ever received the hepatitis B vaccine?," the survey form included the following information, which interviewers were to read "if necessary":

This [the hepatitis B vaccine] is given in three separate doses and has been available since 1991. It is recommended for newborn infants, adolescents, and people such as health care workers, who may be exposed to the hepatitis B virus.

and since 2023:

The hepatitis B vaccine has been available since 1982 for newborn infants, adolescents, and people who may be exposed to the Hepatitis B virus. Since 2022, it is recommended for all persons under age 60, and for persons aged 60 years and older who may be exposed to the Hepatitis B virus.

The Field Representative's Manual for 2000-2003 provided the following additional information, which was not routinely shared with respondents:

This relatively new vaccine protects against a certain type of viral liver infection (hepatitis) which affects many adolescents to young adults. It is usually given as a series of three injections in the first two years of life, beginning between birth and 2 months of age.

It is worth noting that, since 2023, NHIS also specifies that the hepatitis B vaccine is given in two or three separate doses.

Those with an affirmative response in SHOTHEPBEV were asked a follow-up question about the number of doses (less than 3 versus at least 3) of hepatitis B vaccine they had received (SHOTHEPBNO).
