Description
For persons aged 14 and older who were self-employed (in 1990-1992) and who were self-employed and also worked for an employer (in 1993-1996) during the month prior to the interview, SELFEMPMO reports the number of months that the person was self-employed in the past year.
SELFEMPMO is part of the Family Resources supplement that provides information on individuals' health benefits, amount of coverage and income received from employment, welfare benefits, public assistance, and savings.
Questions in the Family Resources supplement are different from those in the core survey in terms of the content and the treatment of missing data. Questions in the Family Resources were normally asked of the month prior to the interview while the core survey asked of the last calendar year. All missing data in the Family Resources supplement were imputed by NHIS.
Comparability
In 1990-1992, persons who were exclusively self-employed and those who were self-employed and worked for an employer were asked of this question. Starting in 1993, only persons who were self-employed and worked for an employer were included in the universe.
Users can use EMPTYPELM to exclude persons who were exclusively self-employed in 1990-1992 to make this variable comparable from 1990 to 1996.
