Description

For persons aged 14 and older who had a job or business during the month prior to the interview, EMPTYPELM reports if the person worked exclusively for an employer, was exclusively self-employed, or if the person worked for an employer and was also self-employed.

In 1993, this variable is only available for persons who were interviewed in quarters 3 and 4.

EMPTYPELM is part of the Family Resources supplement that provides information on individuals' health benefits, amount of coverage and income received from employment, welfare benefits, public assistance, and savings during the month prior to the interview.

Questions in the Family Resources supplement are different from those in the core survey in terms of the content and the treatment of missing data. Questions in the Family Resources were normally asked of the month prior to the interview while the core survey asked of the last calendar year. All missing data in the Family Resources supplement were imputed by NHIS. Users can refer to the imputation flag variable EMPTYPIMFL to identify persons with imputed data.

Comparability

Changes in the universe in 1993 affect the raw frequency but should not affect the comparability of this variable. As always, users should use the appropriate weight for their analyses.
