Description

For persons with at least one private insurance plan, PRIHMO is a recoded variable which indicates whether the person has a plan through an HMO. Information on healthcare plans for all family members was collected on up to five plans. For each plan, respondents were asked how the plan was obtained and what it covered.

Private health insurance excluded plans which pay only for accidents, but in 1989, respondents were specifically instructed to exclude single service plans. Users are strongly encouraged to review the user notes Insurance Data Collection and Private Insurance Definitions.

Comparability

The specific exclusion of single service plans in 1989 may reduce comparability. However, common single service plans were reportedly uncommon in 1986, so comparability may not be greatly reduced.
