Description

For respondents age 18 and over who have ever smoked at least 50 cigars in their entire life (and those who currently smoked a pipe in 1992), this variable reports responses to the question, "On the average, how many days per month [do/did] you smoke a pipe?"

In 1987, the Field Representative's Manual noted that if questions arise, interviewers should include pipe tobacco only, and cigarette or cigars crumbled into pipes should not be counted.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is not quite comparable between the 1987 and 1992 surveys. The 1992 universe for this question only includes current pipe users.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever smoked a pipe at least 50 times.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever smoked a pipe, have smoked a pipe at least 50 times and smoke a pipe now.
