Description
For sample children (or sample children with two residential parents prior to 2021), PAR2REL reports the relationship type between the second residential parent and the sample child. The relationship between the sample child and the first residential parent is indicated by PAR1REL.
Related Variables
PAR2REL is one of several variables that NCHS makes available about the demographic characteristics of parents of sample children. For a complete list of these variables, see the variable description for NUMRESPRNT.
Comparability
Between 2020 and 2021, the universe for PAR2REL changed from "sample children with two residential parents" to "all sample children." This change resulted in the introduction of new variable codes, as well the division of code 3 (Other or unknown) into code 4 (Other) and codes 7, 8, and 9 (Unknown). Users wishing to compare data from 2021-onward to that from 2019-2020 should combine 2021 codes 0 (Not in Universe) and 4 (No second residential parent), as well as combining codes 3, 7, 8, and 9.

- 2019-2020: Sample children with two residential parents
- 2021-2023: Sample children ages 0-17
