Description

For persons age 5 to 24 who need orthodontic care but have not obtained it (including persons who think they need to have their teeth straightened or who have been told by a dentist that they need to have their teeth straightened), ORTHNORM records the main reason why the person is not currently receiving care.

ORTHNORM is part of the Dental Health Supplement. Respondents could report up to three reasons for not receiving orthodontic care. For related variables and more information about this supplement, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see ORTHEVER.

Universe

  • 1974: Persons age 5 to 24 who have never had their teeth straightened or had bands on their teeth, and who think teeth need to be straightened or who have ever been told by a dentist or orthodontist that teeth need to be straightened.
