Codes and Frequencies
Description
For persons under age 67 who had Medicare coverage last month, MCTIME indicates the length of time covered by Medicare.
Medicare was generally defined to respondents as a program which pays for care for persons with a disability, regardless of age; thus, this question must be asked even if there is no family member aged 65 years or older.
For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
