Description

For persons with Medicare Managed Care Plans, MCDOC reports whether the person could go to any doctor (who would accept Medicare) or must choose from a list of doctors. If the plan assigned the doctor, then the person was included in the "Select doctor from list" category.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues.

MCDOC is not comparable with variables for the period 1997 forward, such as MCARHMO, which indicates if the person has an HMO. From 1997 forward, the NCHS edited the type of coverage someone based on the verbatim plan name and responses to other questions on insurance.
