Description
For sample adults with Medicare (HIMCAREE, MCARETYP) who indicate having a Medicare Advantage plan (MCADVNTG) or Medicare HMO plan (MCHMO), MCADVR indicates if the individual's plan is a Medicare Advantage plan or a private plan (not Medicare Advantage). Respondents are first asked for the name for their Medicare Advantage or Medicare HMO plan. Responses to that question are recoded into the dichotomous variable MCADVR, indicating whether the plan is a Medicare Advantage or private plan.
The 2019 Field Representative's Manual gives the following definitions of Medigap and Medicare Supplement, which are examples of private plans that are not a Medicare Advantage plan:
"Medigap (Medicare Supplement) or Medicare Supplement Insurance helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare does not cover like: copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Medigap policies are sold by private companies. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans are ways to get Medicare benefits while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits. Medigap or Medicare Supplement plans are considered to be private health insurance."
