Description

For sample adults who had no difficulty, some difficulty, or a lot of difficulty hearing even when using a hearing aid, or refused to answer or didn't know if they had difficulty hearing even when using a hearing aid (HRPROBAMT), HRDIFCONV1QR asked respondents to report the amount of difficulty they had hearing what is said in a conversation with one other person in a quiet room. Respondents who reported that they could not hear at all, even when using a hearing aid, were not asked this question.

In 2010, this item was collected for sample adults who completed the Quality of Life supplement (administered to approximately a quarter of sample adults). In 2011-2017, this item was collected for sample adults who completed Adult Functioning and Disability supplement (administered to a subset of sample adults). For details on this supplement, please see the Adult Functioning and Disability and Quality of Life Supplements User Note. Beginning in 2018, this item was included on the sample adult questionnaire.

Comparability

Beginning in 2018, this item was included on the sample adult questionnaire. Please refer to Weights section for information about sample-specific weights. As always, users should employ the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Comparability may be affected by changes to the universe over time and the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
