Description

Respondents were asked if they used a hearing aid.

Comparability

There are universe changes over time. Beginning in 2018, this item was included on the sample adult questionnaire. Please refer to the "Universe" tab for specific information about how the universe changed. As always, users should employ the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 2010: One quarter of sample adults, included in quality of life supplement (and excluded from family disability supplement), who have no difficulty, some difficulty, a lot of difficulty hearing, even when wearing a hearing aid (or for whom the amount of difficulty hearing is unknown).
  • 2011: Sample adults 18+ selected for the Family Disability questions who had no difficulty, some difficulty, or a lot of difficulty hearing even when using a hearing aid, or refused to answer or didn't know if they had difficulty hearing, even when using a hearing aid.
  • 2012-2017: Sample adults 18+ who were asked the Family Disability questions (FDB) and were randomly selected to receive the Functioning and Disability (AFD) section.
  • 2018: Sample adults aged 18 and older.
