Description
For sample adults with private health insurance (HIPRIVATEE) who are not the policy holder for the first private health insurance plan (HIP1WHO), HIP1RELPOLICY indicates the person's relationship to the policy holder. Prior to 2019, HIP1RELPOLICY was asked of all persons with a private health insurance plan whose policyholder is outside the family roster (usually not in the household).
The NHIS provides data for the first two private insurance plans reported. Individuals with more than two private plans have a "2" reported for the variable HIPRIVGT2. For more information on insurance data collection in the NHIS, please see the user note.
This variable can be used to monitor the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Comparability
Prior to 2019, the code 1 ("Child") explicitly included stepchildren. Additionally, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. - 2011-2018: Persons with a private insurance plan whose policyholder is outside of the family roster.
- 2019-2024: Sample adults age 18+ with private health insurance (HIPRIVATEE) who are not the policyholder for plan 1 (HIP1WHO).
