Description
For persons without any insurance (a private plan, public assistance, Indian Health insurance, or military health care) in the previous month but who had coverage in the past three years, HINOTRIED reports whether the person tried to find insurance at the time they stopped being covered.

Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
Universe
- 1993: Persons in quarters 3 or 4 who were not covered by Medicaid, Medicare, other public assistance, Indian Health insurance, CHAMPUS/CHAMP-VA, other military health care, or any private health insurance plan but were covered by a plan within the past 3 years.
- 1994-1996: Persons who were not covered by Medicaid, Medicare, other public assistance, Indian Health insurance, CHAMPUS/CHAMP-VA, other military health care, or any private health insurance plan but were covered by a plan within the past 3 years.
