Description

For people who were working or were temporarily absent from a job or business during the previous week (see EMPSTAT), HIATWORK indicates whether health insurance was offered to them through their workplace.

Comparability

This variable is largely comparable over time. The question wording differed slightly between 1997-2000 and 2001 forward.

 

In the earlier period, the question was, "Was health insurance offered to you through your workplace?" In the later period, the question was, "Regarding your job or work last week, was health insurance offered to you through your workplace?"

There was also a slight structural difference in the universe for HIATWORK between 1997-2000 and 2001 forward.

 

The filter variable for HIATWORK, EMPSTAT did not initially distinguish between people working at a job or business for pay and not for pay in the earlier period; both were implicitly combined in the category "working at a job or business." Beginning in 2001, EMPSTAT has two separate categories for people working during the preceding week (i.e., "working for pay at a job or business" and "working, but not for pay, at a job or business"). The universe for HIATWORK was affected by this change only to the extent that people working, but not for pay (e.g., working for a family farm or business without receiving wages), tended to underreport themselves as "working" in the earlier period.

Universe

  • 1993: Persons in quarters 3 or 4 who did not have a job and insurance in their own name, or were not 70 or over, or were not employed in past 2 weeks.
  • 1994-1996: Persons who did not have a job and insurance in their own name, or were not 70 or over, or were not employed in past 2 weeks.
  • 1997-2000: Persons age 18+ working at a job or business last week or with a job or business from which they were temporarily absent last week.
  • 2001-2018: Persons age 18+ who were working, either for pay or without pay, at a job or business last week, or who had a job or business from which they were temporarily absent last week.
