Codes and Frequencies
For sample adults in 2000 who had taken any mixed or single herbal or botanical supplement during the past 12 months (HERYR) and sample adults and children in 2012 who had taken any herbs or non-vitamin supplements, HERYOTH indicates whether the person had taken any "other" herbal supplement during the past 12 months.
"Other" herbal supplement was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the 2002 and 2012 Complementary and Alternative Health Supplements. If sample respondents gave a positive response to HERYOTH, they were asked a series of follow-up questions.
Additional information about use of "other" herbal supplements was collected for respondents who reported using "other" herbal supplements in the past 12 months, including variables on frequency of use. Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus and search function to learn more about these variables.
