For sample adults who had taken any mixed or single herbal or botanical supplement (2000, 2012) or had used natural herbs for their own health (2002) during the past 12 months (HERYR) and sample children in 2012, HERYMIL indicates whether the person had taken milk thistle during the past 12 months.

Milk thistle was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the 2002 and 2012 Complementary and Alternative Health Supplements. If sample respondents gave a positive response to HERYMIL, they were asked a series of follow-up questions.
