Description
For sample adults and sample children who had ever used firearms (GUNUSEV), GUNFIREXTOT reports the total number of rounds ever fired. In 2007, this question was asked to only sample adults.
[show more]Interviewers introduced these questions on firearms by stating, "The next questions are about your current or previous exposure to loud sounds or noises." Interviewers asked, "How many TOTAL rounds have you ever fired?" The survey form directed interviewers to read categories if necessary and to include target shooting, hunting and occupational experiences (military service, etc.). Further, the survey form advised that, "One round equals one shot."
The codes changed between 2007 and 2023 and values were reported in categories as follows:
- 1 to less than 100 rounds
- 100 to less than 1000 rounds
- 1000 to less than 10,000 rounds
- 2023: 10,000 rounds or more
- 2007: 10,000 to less than 50,000 rounds
- 2007: 50,000 rounds or more
Comparability
Because the intervals used to record respondents' answers varies over time, IPUMS NHIS uses a composite coding system for GUNFIREXTOT to maximize comparability.
[show more]The first digit identifies categories which can be identified in all years. The second digit identifies periods specified for only a subgroup of years.
In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
