Description

GUMDISEV reports if the person has ever been told by a doctor that he or she has gum disease. Please see comparability and universe tabs for information on the universe for each sample.

In 2007, respondents with an affirmative answer in GUMDISEV were asked a follow-up question about whether they had gum disease during the past 12 months (GUMDISYR). GUMDISYR (Had gum disease, past 12 months) is also available for sample children.

This variable was part of the 1989 Diabetes supplement and was asked only of sample adults who do not have confirmed diabetes. A complementary variable, DIAGUMDZEV, is available for all adults who have confirmed diabetes. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Due to changes in the universe and question wording, this variable is not comparable between samples. In 1989, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and older who do not have confirmed diabetes. A complementary variable, DIAGUMDZEV, is available for all adults who have confirmed diabetes. In 2007, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and older.
