Description

GALSGBT12C indicates whether the person had chronic gallstones or gallbladder trouble in the past year. This variable is created with supplemental programming by the IPUMS NHIS staff from the pre-1997 condition records. For general information about IHIS variables (such as GALSGBT12C) created from the pre-1997 condition records, see the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables.

Defining Gallstone/Gallbladder Trouble Records and Identifying Persons with Gallstones or Gallbladder Trouble

For all available years, persons who were asked a direct question about gallstones or gallbladder trouble and who have a chronic gallstones or gallbladder trouble condition record are given a "Yes" code for GALSGBT12C. Persons who were asked a direct question about gallstones or gallbladder trouble but do not have a chronic gallstones or gallbladder trouble record are given a code of "No." Persons who were not asked a direct question about gallstones or gallbladder trouble, or for whom it is unknown whether they were asked such a question, are given a code of "NIU" (not in universe), regardless of whether they have a chronic gallstones or gallbladder trouble record.

1975 and 1978

For 1975 and 1978, gallstones or gallbladder trouble records were defined as those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original NHIS public use files:

  • "5740" ("Cholelithiasis with acute cholecystitis")
  • "5741" ("Cholelithiasis with cholecystitis, other")
  • "5749" ("Other and unspecified cholelithiasis")

The above condition code values come from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes Revision 8.

Gallstones or gallbladder trouble records were also defined as those condition records with a code of "179" ("Gallbladder trouble, not otherwise specified") in the variable DIAGR1 in the original NHIS public use files. This condition code value comes from NCHS's Diagnostic Recode #1: Diseases, Injuries, and Impairments and from, respectively.

Additionally, to be considered "chronic," gallstone and gallbladder trouble records must have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.

1979 to 1981

For 1979-1981, gallstones or gallbladder trouble records were defined as those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original NHIS public use files:

  • "5740" ("Calculus of gallbladder with acute choecystitis")
  • "5741" ("Calculus of gallbladder with other cholecystitis")
  • "5742" ("Calculus of gallbladder without mention of cholecystitis")
  • "5743" ("Calculus of bile duct with acute cholecystitis")
  • "5744" ("Calculus of bile duct with other cholecystitis")
  • "5745" ("Calculus of bile duct without mention of cholecystitis")
  • "5750" ("Acute cholecystitis")
  • "5751" ("Other cholecystitis")
  • "5752" ("Obstruction of gallbladder")
  • "5753" ("Hydrops of gallbladder")
  • "5754" ("Perforation of gallbladder")
  • "5755" ("Fistula of gallbladder")
  • "5756" ("Cholesterolosis of gallbladder")
  • "5758" ("Other specified disorders of gallbladder")
  • "5759" ("Unspecified disorder of gallbladder")

These condition code values come from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes Revision 9. As with earlier years, to be considered "chronic," gallstone and gallbladder trouble records must also have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.

1982 to 1996

For 1982 to 1996, gallstones or gallbladder trouble records were defined in one of two ways.

First, those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original NHIS public use files were considered gallbladder trouble records:

  • "5750" ("Acute cholecystitis")
  • "5751" ("Other cholecystitis")
  • "5752" ("Obstruction of gallbladder")
  • "5753" ("Hydrops of gallbladder")
  • "5754" ("Perforation of gallbladder")
  • "5755" ("Fistula of gallbladder")
  • "5756" ("Cholesterolosis of gallbladder")
  • "5758" ("Other specified disorders of gallbladder")
  • "5759" ("Unspecified disorder of gallbladder")

These condition code values come from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes Revision 9. As with earlier years, to be considered "chronic," gallstone and gallbladder trouble records must also have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.

Second, those condition records with a code of "301" ("Gallbladder stones") in the variable C1CONDRC in the original NHIS public use files were considered gallstone records. This condition code value comes from NCHS's Diagnostic Recode C: Chronic Conditions and Impairments.

Weights
For 1975, GALSGBT12C should be weighted with PERWEIGHT.

For 1978 to 1981, GALSGBT12C should be weighted with CONDWT1.

For 1982 to 1996, GALSGBT12C should be weighted with CONDWT3.

Comparability

As with all of the person-level condition variables created by IHIS from condition records prior to 1997, the universe for GALSGBT12C is substantially different for 1978 forward than it is for years prior to 1978. Beginning in 1978, only persons living in 1/6 of households, rather than all persons, were asked a direct question about having gallstones or gallbladder trouble in the past year. There is also a minor universe change between the sets of years 1978-1981 and 1982-1996. These changes require that different weight variables be used depending on which years of data are analyzed. See the "Description" tab for details.

Additionally, there is a change in the way "Yes" responses are coded over time. See the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables for details about the composite coding scheme employed by IHIS.

Universe

  • 1975: All persons.
  • 1978-1981: Persons living in 1/6 of households (who received Contition List 1).
  • 1982-1996: Persons living in 1/6 of households (who received Contition List 3).
