Description

For sample adults and sample children in 2007 who had seen at least one traditional healer (see below) during the past 12 months, FOKTYPNO reports how many of the 7 specified traditional healers the sample person had seen during the past 12 months.

Interviewers asked whether sample adults and sample children had seen any of the following specific types of traditional healers during the past year:

  • Native American Medicine Man (FOKNAMYR)

FOKTYPNO is a summary variable that reports a sample person's number of "Yes" responses (ranging from 1 to 7) to the above folk medicine variables.

For more information on the full range of variables related to folk medicine, including definitions, see FOKYR.

Comparability

FOKTYPNO is only available for 2007.

When collecting information about consulting folk healers during the past year, interviewers used slightly different question wording for sample children and sample adults. The questions for sample children asked if they had seen a particular traditional healer "for health reasons." The questions for sample adults did not include this qualifier. Instead, sample adults were asked, "During the past 12 months, did you see [a traditional healer]?" "Yes" responses to both types of questions were summed to produce the value reported in FOKTYPNO.
