Description

For sample adults in 2007 who had seen at least one traditional healer (see below) during the past 12 months, FOKTYPMOST reports which type of traditional healer the respondent had seen most often.

Sample adults indicated whether they had seen any of the following traditional healers for health reasons during the past year:

  • Native American Medicine Man (FOKNAMYR)

Because respondents could report having seen multiple types of traditional healers during the past year, FOKTYPMOST identifies which of the 7 kinds of traditional healers the respondent had seen most often. Interviewers were given the instruction, "If respondent cannot choose one traditional healer, probe for the one most important for health."

The traditional healer identified in FOKTYPMOST is used to fill in question wording on many subsequent survey items. For example, FOKNO asks, "During the past 12 months, how many times did you see [fill: type of traditional healer]?"

For more information on the full range of variables related to folk medicine, including definitions, see FOKYR.
