Description

For sample adults age 18+ who have ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had influenza or pneumonia (FLUPNEUEV) and sample children under age 18, FLUPNEUYR reports whether individuals had influenza or pneumonia during the past 12 months. For sample children, the influenza or pneumonia during the past year had to be diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional.

Related Variables

Several variables in IPUMS NHIS address vaccinations for flu and pneumonia. For 1991 and 1997 forward, VACFLUSH12M reports whether sample adults/persons (and, beginning in 2005, sample children) had a flu shot during the past 12 months. Beginning in 2005, for those with an affirmative response in VACFLUSH12M, information was also collected on the month (VACFLUSHMO) and year (VACFLUSHYR) of their most recent flu shot.

For 2004 forward, the variable VACFLUSP12M reports whether sample adults (and, beginning in 2005, sample children) had a flu spray vaccine during the past 12 months. Beginning in 2005, for those with an affirmative response in VACFLUSP12M, interviewers also collected information on the month and year of both the most recent flu nasal spray (VACFLUSPMO and VACFLUSPYR).

Beginning in August 2010, NHIS no longer asks about H1N1 vaccinations separately from seasonal flu vaccines. For more information, see the Comparability Tab of VACFLUYR.

In 1991 and 1997 forward, SHOTPNUEV indicates whether sample adults ever had a pneumonia vaccination (SHOTPNUEV).
