Description

For sample adults who had participated in gardening in the past 2 weeks (EXYARD), EXYARDNO reports the number of times the respondent had participated in gardening over those 2 weeks.

After the interviewer determined that a respondent participated in gardening, respondents were asked, "How many times in the past 2 weeks did you participate in gardening?"

Related Variables 

Respondents were also asked how many minutes on average they had spent gardening each time during the past 2 weeks (EXYARDMIN) and how much their heart rate or breathing had increased while gardening(EXYARDBR).

Comparability

Apart from universe changes, EXYARDNO is fully comparable across all years.

Universe

  • 1985; 1990: Sample persons aged 18-74 who gardened or did yard work in the past 2 weeks.
  • 1991; 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who gardened or did yard work in the past 2 weeks.
  • 1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who gardened or did yard work in the past 2 weeks.
