For sample persons in 1991 whose last routine check-up was less than 1 year ago (PHYSICALYRS) and whose doctor or other health professional recommended beginning or continuing walking (EXDWA), EXDWAMOTH indicates whether respondents were advised to check how hard they should exercise by using some "other" method. For EXDWAMOTH, this means something other than measuring heart rate or pulse, paying attention to rate or depth of breathing, working up a sweat, measuring the distance or speed of walking/cycling/swimming, etc., or exercising to the level that talking is difficult.
