Description
For sample persons in 1991 whose last routine check-up was less than 1 year ago (PHYSICALYRS) and whose doctor or other health professional recommended beginning or continuing other exercise (EXDOTH), EXDOTHMOTH indicates whether respondents were advised to check how hard they should exercise by using some "other" method. For EXDOTHMOTH, this means something other than measuring heart rate or pulse, paying attention to rate or depth of breathing, working up a sweat, measuring the distance or speed of walking/cycling/swimming, etc., or exercising to the level that talking is difficult.

Sample adults who were told to do other exercise were also asked the recommended frequency and duration of each session other exercise, as well as what method they were advised to use to check how hard they should exercise.
Responses to these follow-up questions can be found in the following variables:
- EXDOTHMIN (minutes each session doctor told to do other exercise)
- EXDOTHWK (times per week doctor told to do other exercise)
- EXDOTHMBR (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: breathing)
- EXDOTHMHR (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: heart rate)
- EXDOTHMSW (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: sweating)
- EXDOTHMTL (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: talking)
- EXDOTHMSP (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: distance or speed)
- EXDOTHMNO (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: none)
Sample adults were also asked whether they were advised by their doctor or other health professional to do other physical activities. Along with reporting other exercise, respondents could say they were advised to do any of 8 other physical activities (including one residual "other" category).
