Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults in 1991 whose last routine check-up was less than 1 year ago (PHYSICALYRS) and whose doctor or other health professional recommended beginning or continuing exercise (EXDOCREC), EXDOTH indicates whether the doctor or health professional recommended that the person begin or continue other exercise.
Related Other Exercise Variables
Sample adults who were advised to other exercise were asked to report the recommended frequency and duration of other exercise, as well as what method they were advised to use to check how hard they should exercise.
Responses to these follow-up questions can be found in the following variables:
- EXDOTHMIN (minutes each session doctor told to do other exercise)
- EXDOTHWK (times per week doctor told to do other exercise)
- EXDOTHMBR (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: breathing)
- EXDOTHMHR (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: heart rate)
- EXDOTHMSW (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: sweating)
- EXDOTHMTL (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: talking)
- EXDOTHMSP (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: distance or speed)
- EXDOTHMOTH (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: other)
- EXDOTHMNO (doctor recommended method of checking other exercise: none)
Sample adults were also asked whether they were advised by their doctor or other health professional to do other physical activities. Along with reporting other exercise, respondents could say they were advised to do any of 8 other physical activities (including one residual "other" category). For more information on the variables related to these other activities, see EXDOCREC.
