Description

For sample adults in 2002 and for sample adults and children in 2012 who had ever seen a practitioner for energy healing therapy (EHTEV), EHTYR reports whether the person person had used energy healing therapy in the past 12 months. In 1999, information about energy healing therapy use in the past 12 month was collected from all sample adults.

Energy healing therapy was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the Complementary and Alternative Health Supplements. For more information about these variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus and search function.

Definitions

The 1999 Field Representative's Manual defines energy healing as:

when someone else stimulates your body's energy fields without touching you.

This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

In later years the definitions were more expansive. The 2002 Field Representative's Manual says that "energy healing/Reiki" is:

a method for facilitating the body's ability to heal itself through the flow and focusing of healing energy (Reiki itself means universal healing energy). During treatment, this healing energy, often considered to be of divine origin, is channeled through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body to restore a normal energy balance and, therefore, health. Energy healing therapy has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments and health problems, and is often used in conjunction with other alternative and conventional medical treatments.

This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

The 2007 and 2012 Field Representative's Manuals provide a similar definition:

Energy Healing Therapy involves the channeling of healing energy through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body to restore a normal energy balance and, therefore, health. Energy healing therapy has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments and health problems, and is often used in conjunction with other alternative and conventional treatments.

In 2007 and 2012 field representatives were advised to "feel free to offer [this definition] even if the respondent has not requested [it]."

The 2002, 2007 and 2012 survey questions asked whether the person had seen "a practitioner" for energy healing therapy in the past 12 months for sample adults in 2002 and 2007, and sample adults and children in 2012. In 2007, the survey question asked whether the person had seen "a provider or practitioner" for sample children. The 2007 and 2012 Manuals define an "alternative provider or practitioner" as:

someone who is knowledgeable about a specific alternative health practice. This person provides care or gives advice about its use, and usually receives payment for his or her services.

Comparability

There is a slight change in the wording of the question associated with EHTYR between the 1999 and the later questionnaires, with the latter referring to the use of a practitioner to receive energy healing treatment. For the exact question wording in each year, please refer to the "Survey Text" tab.

The later versions of EHTYR emphasize the use of an energy healing practitioner, an emphasis that is not found in the 1999 question. However, the 1999 definition of energy healing (see above) points out the role of "someone else" in providing the treatment, and the definitions from the Field Representative's Manuals for later survey years make explicit mention of a practitioner.

The term Reiki only appears in the question for 2002. The definition for that year (see above) presents it as a synonymous term for energy healing.

In 2007, sample children were added to the universe for this question. In 2007 only, the sample child universe was not restricted by if the sample child had ever used energy healing (EHTEV). Because of this expanded universe, the number of negative responses for EHTYR is much higher in 2007.
