Codes and Frequencies
For sample adults who believe that good eating habits reduce disease (EHDEFFECT) and who think that cancer is (probably) related to eating habits (EHDCANCER), EHCANSALT indicates whether the respondent believes that "eating less salt" would help reduce the chances of getting certain kinds of cancer.
To obtain this information, interviewers showed respondents a flash card (or read the contents of the flash card if the interview was conducted by telephone) containing a list of 8 dietary changes. Interviewers then asked, "Which of these would be helpful if a person wanted to reduce his or her chances of getting certain kinds of cancer?" Respondents could select more than one dietary change. Respondents could select more than once dietary change.

- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CACT supplement) who believe that good eating habits reduce disease (or whose beliefs on this point were unknown) AND who think that cancer is (probably) related to eating habits.
